Snow falling on a tree-lined path beside an iron fence

every time i look up pink christmas bedroom decor i see a room where somebody has changed the bedding, the curtains, and apparently the entire color of their furniture. which is lovely to look at, but what am i supposed to do with a christmas duvet for the other eleven months of the year? i think i’d rather buy a spool of pink ribbon and see how far i can get with it.

what i want is a little bit of that old sweet shop look. pale pink like the paper around a box of chocolates, silver ornaments that catch the light when you walk past, and a few powder-blue stars cut out by hand. i’d put it all in three places i look at every day anyway. and honestly, if you only feel like doing the mirror, do the mirror. that’s probably the one i’d keep up the longest.

silver ornaments for the bedside table

i have a very specific opinion about decorating a bedside table, which is that you need to be able to set a glass of water down in the dark. so before you put anything on it, look at what you already keep there and see where you have a few inches. mine would go next to the lamp, because that’s where you’ll actually see the silver at night.

what i’d use from home — a little saucer from the kitchen and two silver ornaments from the tree. i’d put the ornaments on the saucer and tie a bow through the loop of one of them, with the tails hanging over the edge. if you have a square of tissue paper left from a gift, fold it up and put it underneath so the ornaments stay put. i like pink tissue here, especially if the saucer is white. it gives you that little box-of-sweets look even if the ornaments themselves are very ordinary.

what i’d buy if i needed it — a roll of pale pink satin ribbon and a small set of silver ornaments. i’d use the same ribbon everywhere in the room, so one roll is plenty.

powder-blue paper stars for the mirror

i’d do the paper stars here because a mirror is one place where you can put something up without having to clear a surface first. also, have you ever cut out a star and then spent ten minutes trying to make all the points the same length? just leave it. once there are five of them together it’s the funny little ones you end up liking.

what i’d use from home — the blue part of an old greeting card, the flap of a blue envelope, or white paper colored in with whatever pale blue pencil you have. i’d cut out one star about the size of a cookie and make the others smaller. put the big one in the upper corner and scatter three or four little ones just below it. stick them to the glass with a bit of removable tape. then tie one pink bow at the top if there’s somewhere on the frame to loop it through. i’d leave the tails a little long, especially on a tall mirror.

what i’d buy if i needed it — a sheet of powder-blue cardstock and a roll of low-tack tape. one sheet will make more stars than you need here, so save a couple for the bookshelf.

a pink striped gift box for the bookshelf

you know when a sweet shop has those little striped boxes in the window and you’d almost buy one just because you want to take the box home? that’s the part i want to copy here. i’d pick one shelf, preferably one with books i actually like looking at, and put a little wrapped box at the end of the row.

what i’d use from home — an empty tea box, some scrap paper, and the pink ribbon from the bedside table. wrap the box in plain white paper, then draw on wide pink stripes with a marker or colored pencil. they can be a little uneven. sit it beside two books laid flat and tuck one of the leftover blue stars between the box and the ribbon. if there’s still an ornament left, i’d put it on the stack of books. if the shelf is already full, the little box can go right in front of the spines.

what i’d buy if i needed it — one sheet of pink striped wrapping paper. though if you already have a small box with a pretty label, i’d leave the label showing and just tie a bow around it. this is exactly the sort of thing i mean when i say the packaging is part of the gift. sometimes i like it enough to keep it for a whole other christmas.

The prettiest details are usually the ones you already have.
